February 17, 2007 - There's a lot going on now after a relatively slow 2006: A new commission for Herricks Middle School Chamber Orchestra of Long Island called "Flying Machine," a new commission for the Southtowns Youth Orchestra of the Buffalo, New York area called, "Humble Hero," the revival of "Night" at the San Francisco Ballet, the resetting of "Carnival of the Animals" with new costumes and new characters with the Miami City Ballet, a new post as Music Director of the Gemini Youth Orchestra of Long Island, with a concert at Alice Tully at the end of March, the gala concert of the Matthew Pierce Ensemble this year to be posted here shortly, the release, finally, of the Unsung String Duo record and a new puppy called Hanley, my first year in East Northport Long Island, which I love, and the finishing of my private pilot license. Now say all that really fast! One more thing. I found this wonderful article at San Francisco Classical Voice sfcv.org written in 2003 by Janos Gerber. He says very nice things about my music! Boy is he intelligent and informed! Anyway, its a nice read and makes me feel good: Matthew Pierce: Insect Music in Motion Pierce is a rare ballet composer: he serves the choreographer, doesn't call attention to himself, and yet his vital, powerful, "very American" music could well stand on its own. Pulsing without falling into the minimalist trap, evoking (but not imitating) Copland, Pierce's music is layered, complex, and yet instantly accessible. Although wisely staying away from being literal, Pierce has imaginative ways of "illustrating" what happens on the stage.
